Château Haut-Brion boasts a rich history that traces back to ancient times, deriving its name from the Celtic term "Briga." Historical records reveal vine cultivation near the site in 1426 by Johanna Faure, producing wine for a local chapel. However, it was in 1521 that the estate, then known as Aubrion, began its documented annual wine production, marking it as the oldest continuously operational winery in Bordeaux. In 1549, Jean de Pontac constructed the foundation for the present château. Notably, in 1663, Samuel Pepys' review of Haut Brion marked the world's first professional wine critique. The estate's innovative spirit continued with the opening of Pontac's Head tavern in England in 1666.

In 1935, Clarence Dillon, a New York financier, purchased Château Haut-Brion, ushering in a new era. Over the years, ownership transitions occurred within the Dillon family, with Prince Robert of Luxembourg assuming management in 2008. The estate's vineyard spans 50 hectares, cultivating Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Notably, the vineyard makeup has evolved, with a shift towards increased Merlot planting since the mid-1990s. This legacy of continuity and adaptation underscores Château Haut-Brion's enduring significance in Bordeaux's winemaking heritage.
