The Originators of Brunello: Biondi-Santi

The Biondi-Santi family is credited with inventing the Brunello di Montalcino style in the 19th century, and to this day, the seventh-generation winemakers produce some of the most rigorously traditional and ageworthy wines of the appellation. Their Brunello "Annata" is made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso sourced from high-elevation vineyards at the historic Greppo estate in Montalcino, and after harvest, the wine is aged entirely in large Slavonian oak casks to avoid the flavors and tannins of smaller barriques. The result is a classic expression of pure Sangiovese, bearing all of Biondi-Santi's signature aromatics and structure at a fraction of the price of the Riserva.
