What is a wine broker?

A wine broker specializes in  buying, selling and trading fine wines for investors, restaurants and fine wine collectors. Selling your wine collection can be quite an emotional task. You've collected fine wine, perhaps for decades, and now you've arrived at a point where it makes more financial sense to sell your collection than to consume it.  Estate Wine Brokers is a fine wine brokerage firm. Estate Wine Brokers doesn't work like a traditional wine broker. We are interested in brokering or purchasing your properly cellared fine wine, and will handle the door-to-door logistics of every transaction.

What is the difference between a wine broker vs a wine auction?

Typically it will take you 3 months to sell your wine at a wine auction. With a wine auction, you will receive a Low/Mid/High estimate with a reserve price. Wine auctions are speculative and are subject to market up-swing and down-swing. Additionally with a wine auction, you may receive free shipping from your cellar to the auction house if the collection is large enough, but if the wine doesn't sell then you'll be charged storage and return shipping fees that are generally fairly high.

Estate Wine Brokers pays fast for wine collections, and generally we can complete a transaction within 7-10 days of faster in some cases. Our prices are generally more than auction net-to-seller pricing by 5-10%. The benefit of using Estate Wine Brokers vs an auction like Wine Bid or Sothebys is that we move quickly and you'll be paid quickly with absolute certainty.

Estate Wine Brokers has over 90 years of collective wine experience, and we are licensed to buy, sell and ship wine in over 42 states and we are licensed with the United States Treasury Department (Federal).

What is my wine worth?

Our unparalleled access to current market wine values will ensure that you receive the best possible return on your investment while avoiding the high commissions and uncertainties of wine auctions. We use a blend of sources to determine fine wine prices that include retail values and auction values adjusted for drinkability and availability.

Should I sell my wine collection?

The first thing you must ask yourself is:

  • Why do I want to or need to sell my wine collection?
  • Do I need money?
  • Has my taste in wine changed?
  • Did I stop drinking wine?
  • Did I inherit a wine collection?

We want to make sure that regardless of the reason why you want to sell your wine collection, it's done with respect, dignity, and confidentiality. The process is quite simple. We request a series of photos, and ask a series of questions to determine the provenance of your wine collection. Once we have these questions answered we assemble a spreadsheet of these wines and produce estimates based on retail and auction prices. Then we place a Buy or Broker offer. Even if we can't help you sell your wine collection then we will at least tell you how or who to sell your wines to.

Should I keep my wine collection and continue to invest in fine wine?

If you think that now's not the right time to sell your wine, we can help you assess the current market conditions and help advise you on how to continue to collect and invest in fine wine as an alternative asset class. Wine as continued to outperform the S&P 500 and we have the supporting data to prove it. Be careful about websites that promise you returns and send you countless offers on new and emerging producers. For example investing in rose wines or white wines comes with a heavier degree of risk and tighter sell-side conditions. Estate Wine Brokers will continue to help guide you in the world of investing in fine wine. Please feel free to send us and email and request a free book on Investing in Fine Wine or subscribe to our email list and receive offers on investment grade wine opportunities.

"Getting a divorce is one of the most difficult things in life to undergo. My ex-husband and I found common ground in wine and food, but as we got older, we found that our differences and our personal goals also translated to a difference in taste in wines. Estate Wine Brokers did a fantastic job of being in the middle of a difficult life-process, but they did the job quickly and with utmost professionalism. We each went our separate ways, and in the process my ex-husband and I kept about 100 bottles each, and converted the rest into cash to account for a down-sized lifestyle. Job well done! - KU - $113,228 - Long Island, NY December 2022

"Estate Wine Brokers has helped my family sell off my late father-in-law's wine collection. My Father-in-Law was a prominent wine collector and accumulated over 2,000 bottles from Burgundy, Bordeaux, Napa and Northern Italy. These were his second babies and he had a bottle with food almost every night until he passed. We believe that Estate Wine Brokers treated us fairly and delivered on their promise to treat his collection with respect, and to ensure his wines ended up in the hands of fellow wine lovers. This is a great company to deal with and delivers in the most professional manner." - DS - $268,800 - Tampa FL September 2022

"Estate Wine Brokers obviously have an impeccable reputation in the industry as they are trusted with rare treasures from far reaching locations.  I was referred to Wine Estate Brokers by a friend who advised me that my wine was far too exclusive for most wine brokerages so I took his sage advice and contacted Darren.  The process was professional and seamless, he was successful beyond my hopes and in a short period of time.  I highly endorse them!" - C.R., $14,768.00 - St Louis, MO January 2021

"We’ve used Estate Wine Brokers for all sides of our wine collecting needs: acquisition, storage, and resale. From acquiring a large private collection at very attractive prices, to selling down some of our excess inventory, to storing items we are holding for later, Alex and Darren have been the consummate professionals." - Chris E., $117,729.41 earned as of May 2020

“I was in the process of downsizing from a house to a condo and needed to sell the collection in my cellar. EWB catalogued and priced the collection, moved it to their storage facility and has thoughtfully sold bottles on a regular basis. I would recommend anyone with a significant collection use them to professionally sell their holdings.” - Mitch V., $103,843.83 earned as of April 2018

"We were selling our collection of fine Bordeaux as we were relocating overseas; we were attracted to Estate Wine Brokers as a more convenient and cost efficient solution than area auction houses. Going with Darren and Estate Wine Brokers was a great decision. They're knowledgeable, totally transparent and have a deep network of active fine wine buyers, while their customer service is excellent: responsive, efficient and always pleasant. In short, if you want to get a good price for your fine wine, with zero effort on your part, I recommend you leave it all to Estate Wine Brokers". - Lionel K., $20,042.34 earned as of June 2020

"I wouldn't hesitate to sell wine again with Estate Wine Brokers. Their in house customer list is full of active wine buyers, and their pricing model ensures wines get sold both quickly and at a fair price. Proceeds arrive on time and significantly faster than most auction houses. It's as hassle-free as wine selling can get." - Jason J., $15,159.27 earned as of March 2020

"When I decided to sell a case of extremely rare wine I was fortunate enough to find an excellent company to conduct the transaction with. The team at Wine Estate Brokers were professional and fair in the offer they made for my wine and then once we agreed on the price; Darren made the process seamless and easy from start to finish.  I would recommend Estate Wine Brokers to anyone looking to either source or sell high end wines as they are very knowledgeable and experienced. In the world of the internet it is sometimes hard to know what kind of company you are dealing with.  Well with Darren and Alex you will be dealing with ultimate professionals as they did exactly what they said they would do. I will definitely work with them again." - Lee P., $13,380.00 earned as of July 2020
