WA 96 "A curiosity (only 250 cases produced) is the 2008 Edge Hill Mixed Blacks, which is basically an heirloom blend of an assortment of grapes planted on a parcel in St. Helena. It includes everything from Grenache, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Gamay, Mourvedre, Carignan and Alicante Bouchet, all co-fermented together. One of the most compelling wines made in California, it is a sexy, hedonistic, full-throttle red that is a tribute to the first generation immigrants that planted these grapes in Napa Valley. Black as a moonless night, it exhibits loads of barbecue smoke, boysenberry, blackberry, charcoal and roasted meat/blood smells. If you love wines from France’s Rhone Valley, you will find this cuvee to be irresistible. It should drink well for 8-10 years at the minimum. (RP)" (12/2010)
