WA 88 "Engel's Clos Vougeot, from vines that average 25-35 years of age, possesses a deep, jammy, berry fruitiness, some attractive smoky, toasty oak, and an inner strength and richness. It may well merit a higher score when it reaches full maturity in several years. Engel admits that when his 1985s were conceived, he was not as talented a winemaker; his wines suffered as a result. From a technical point of view, his 1988s are the best wines he has produced. (RP)" (12/1989)
