Georges de Latour was a French immigrant who arrived in San Francisco in the late 19th century. He became interested in winemaking and founded Beaulieu Vineyard (BV) in 1900 in the Napa Valley.

Initially, BV struggled to produce quality wine due to phylloxera, a pest that was devastating vineyards across Europe and America. But de Latour persevered and in the 1930s, he hired the renowned winemaker André Tchelistcheff to help improve BV's wines.

Together, de Latour and Tchelistcheff experimented with different grape varieties and winemaking techniques, which led to the creation of BV's signature wine, Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine quickly gained a reputation as one of the best Cabernets in California, and helped put Napa Valley on the map as a world-class wine region.

After de Latour's death in 1940, his widow continued to run the winery with Tchelistcheff, and BV became one of the most respected wineries in the United States.
